Aotearoa Jews For Justice launches

Recently, a group of Aotearoa (New Zealand) Jews joined together to form a group called Aotearoa Jews For Justice, in order to show quite clearly that not all Jews are Zionists, and that there are an ever increasing number of Jews all over the world standing in solidarity with the Palestinian and Lebanese people. The group currently has members in Wellington and Christchurch and already we have had expressions of interest from elsewhere in the country. To contact AJFJ, email jewsforjustice[at]gmail[dot]com (don’t forget to fix the address before hitting send!).

We are still working on getting our kaupapa sorted, but hopefully soon we should actually have the core beliefs of the group down on paper. When we do, I’ll be sure to post them here. We will also have a website up and running within the next few days.

Meanwhile, here is the flyer some of our Wellington members handed out on a recent Lebanon/Palestine solidarity march in Wellington, and a letter to the editor from AJFJ that was published in the Dominion Post.

Aotearoa Jews For Justice Speaks Out Against Israel

Aotearoa Jews For Justice stands in solidarity with the Lebanese and Palestinian people suffering at the hands of the Israeli army. We also stand with those Israelis who are challenging the illegal and war-mongering actions of the Israeli state in Palestine and now in Lebanon.

We are part of a growing global movement of Jews who feel that it is our duty to oppose the atrocities being committed by the Israeli government in our name. Israel has never and will never represent us.

We draw from a long tradition of Jews who have campaigned for social justice and against racism and colonialism regardless of where it has occurred. To find out more or to join us, contact jewsforjustice[at]gmail[dot]com

To the editor,

As Israel continues brutalising Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, and continues its expansion in the West Bank, we feel it is important that, as Jews, we stand up and make clear that Israel, despite its claims to the contrary, is not acting in our name.

Aotearoa Jews For Justice stands in solidarity with the Lebanese and Palestinian people suffering at the hands of the Israeli army. We also stand with those Israelis who are challenging the illegal and war-mongering actions of the Israeli state in Palestine and now in Lebanon.

In drawing from a long history of Jews who have worked for social justice all over the globe, we aim to continue the mission of those who have come before us for a just and peaceful world.

Israel has never and will never represent all Jews.

  1. Jude says:

Presumeably if you want justice for the Lebanese you’ll also be writing and condemning Hisbullah for using them as human shields?

  2. Asher says:

Of course I oppose Hizbollah, they are bourgeouis, fundamentalist, authoritarian, murderous, fuckwits. That goes without saying.

The vast majority of my criticism, however, will always be reserved for Israel, for two main reasons:

    1) Power. Look at who holds the power in the region and in this conflict especially, and there you have the answer as to who has the most responsibility.

    2) Israel claims, both directly and indirectly via the local Zionist organisations, to be acting in MY name, as a Jew, and to represent me. As long as it acts in my name, I have a responsibility to denounce it and show the untruthfullness of it’s claims.

  3. Jude says:

Good point. Not only does Israel claim, but other people assume.

Brings up an interesting question as to the concept of power though – whilst Israel is undoubtedly the military power in every sense of the word, I think what makes the middle east so unstable is that whilst few people have the military power Israel does for a sustained campaign, everyone (and I really do mean everyone – Yigal Amir, any potential suicide bomber, Hebron massacre guy, Shazza in ’00) has the power to flare it up and kick the big powers into action. Power to the people…

(apologies for random content. haven’t had a decent discussion in ages thanks to attempting not to offend people at work. hence itchy.)

  4. Asher says:

Yeah, but thats not unique to the middle east – look at the assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand which kickstarted WW1, that only took 1 person to do. However, noone who’s given the buildup to WW1 even a brief glance would suggest that was the only reason it flared up. Likewise with the Middle East, the things you mentioned all came after long buildups…something had to be the straw that broke the camels back, the only question is what.

  5. Anti-Flag says:

    Asher, agreed.

Hmmm, this Aotearoa Jews for Justice better not be another one-member group. Be good to have some Jews in Auckland participating in anti-war demos. May be there are some, i just don’t know it. Be good to know if they exist. To serve as a reminder that Israel does not represent Judaism, nor all Jews.

  6. Asher says:

It isn’t a one member group, don’t worry. While AJFJ is currently only in Wellington and Christchurch, we have had contact with interested people in other centres, so we’ll see what happens.
