About

This blog contains the varied ramblings of an anarchist Jew from Aotearoa / New Zealand. You can contact me via email at anarchiazine[at]gmail[dot]com (don’t forget to fix the address before sending).

In the USA in the 1800s, some people who opposed a centralised federal authority and criticised the government were diagnosed with Anarchia, which was defined as having an “excess of the passion for liberty” that “constituted a form of insanity”. So thats where the name comes from.

Many early posts on Anarchia are carried over from my old blog, Left & Lefter. The move from blogger to WordPress was taken on the 15th March 2006.

The blog is also home to my zine, also entitled Anarchia. You can view it by clicking here.

    Hey Asher,
Just came across your website in connection with the neo-nazi ones posted on hdnz’s website… Thought I’d drop in and say hi. :)

    Hope all’s going well.

  2. anarchist jew? interesting concept. I guess a religious man only adheres to the Divine Rules and not those of Man. I’m down with that.

  3. Asher says:

Mike – Judaism is not simply a religion, it is also a culture (or if you prefer, ethnicity). That is what I consider myself a part of. As for the religion, I’m an atheist, so it isn’t important to me :)

  4. Asher says:

Of course, there are also self-proclaimed Orthodox Jewish anarchists, one of whom I link to – check out Orthodox Anarchist in the anti-zionist blogs section on the right.

1800s does not have a possessive apostrophe. Unless of course 1800 owns every other year of the 19th century. Nor is 1800s a contraction warranting an apostrophe for grammatical purposes.

Clean your act up you slob.

  7. I didn’t know that in the 1800s there was a disease called “Anarchia.” That’s news to me. Thanks for sharing.

  9. Hello I stumbled upon your site and wondered if you can give people out my myspace URl. The reason I’m asking you to do this is because I’m froming an anarchist group that is growing and should have a site up and running soon. If you would get people to contact me from their myspace. The anarchist organization is called Priory of Anarchists’. Check my myspace.

  12. Laplandian says:

    Hi, Asher!

I’m a (sort of) Hasidic Jew from a New York suburb (originally from Russia) and an anarchist. I am not exactly “religious anarchist” or “Jewish anarchist”, but a communist anarchist, who happens to be a traditional Jew.

For me God (Absolute, Einsof, Brahman, Dao, Void etc.) is the inner essence of our consciousness and of reality itself, and so called “religion” is a set of instruments for “reality hacking”. God is all and all is God. So, I’m not an atheist, but not a conventional theist either.

In the history, there were quite a few Orthodox Jewish anarchists, including some Rabbis, though by today’s Orthodox standards they might be considered heretics. They were real consistent anarchists and internationalists. Many, perhaps hundreds, traditional Jews had actively participated in the Makhnovist movement in Ukraine.

How many generations of “jewish atheists” born in this country before you stop referring to your self as a jew? I have friends whose family were originally Catholics from Ireland and as atheists and anarchists they would never refer to themselves as Irish.

    Very nice blog!

  15. mark miller says:

Whats with the coupling of atheism and anarchism all this no gods no masters crap. Anarchy for me is being allowed to be an individual and being allowed to hold individual ideas you cant have that if you appose religion. I’m not religious I’m agnostic.

  16. MJ Overton says:

You may be interested in checking out a fledgling kiwi revolutionary party. As this is in the process of being formed & launcehed you can get some prelim info on (mj overtons) facebook page. the party is called “the salvation party of aotearoa (NZ)”.

  17. I don’t comment, but after reading a lot of comments on this page About | Anarchia. I actually do have a couple of questions for you if it’s okay.

Could it be simply me or do a few of these responses come across as if they are coming from brain
dead people? :-P And, if you are writing on additional sites, I
would like to keep up with everything fresh you have to post.

Could you post a list of all of all your social sites like your Facebook page, twitter
    feed, or linkedin profile?
